Mimetite, El Potosi Mine, Santa Eulalia, Chihuahua, Mexico

The District consist of two areas known as the east camp and the west camp. It is located approximately 19 kilometers southeast from the city of Chihuahua. This is 371 kilometers or four hours south of the border at El Paso TX.
Silver was first found in the early 1700s. Production of the district in recent years has turned to zinc and lead production. A strike closed the El Potosi mine in the early 90s in the west camp. The mine still produces specimens, but on a greatly diminished scale.
The San Antonio el Grande mine in the east camp continued to produce a great variety  of minerals. In late 1999 the mine saw a very nice offering of smithsonite out of an area that doesn't get worked much due to it's mixed ore content. Production of these dramatically stopped in March 2000. Since then the mine was closed in December of 2000, due to labor problems.

The San Antonio mine has reopened recently and specimen production has resumed.
Fortunately I acquired a large supply of good smithsonite, hemimorphite and some anglesite. For more information, see Peter Megaw's article originally published in the  MINERAL NEWS, Vol. 16, No. 3, March 2000, online at  www.mineralnews.com. The MINERAL NEWS is good source for information on what's new in mineral collecting. The Vol. 16, No. 7, July 2000 has an excellent article by Jean des Rivieres on southern Mexico localities. This article continues his article from Sept. 1999.For a good background consult MINERALS OF MEXICO by William D. Panczner.
